Staying cool.....

First things i do each morning after a cup of tea, walking the dog and a cursory tidy-up, I head for the computer to pick up emails and read the news. At the beginning of the pandemic I began to subscribe to all sorts of curious newsletters and blogs, but over the year, and with better things to do than catch up with topics that don’t really interest me, I whittled them down to maybe half a dozen, and on inspection it dawned on me it was the format of these, as much as the content, that kept me incentivised.

With this in mind I have decided to present LSA’s offerings as a simple monthly “list” with links and visual teasers of items that have caught my eye, rather than long spiels. This will allow you to click on links with subjects that engage you and avoid all the blurb that is patently of no interest whatsoever.

So here goes!

2. The possibility of a Perfume Workshop at Les Soeurs Anglaises later this year with French perfumeur, Erik Reiffsteck, using flowers from our abundant garden

5. For Snoopy fans and dog owners……

6. Missing the odd meal out and a bit of fine dining? Grace Dent, The Guardian’s Restaurant critic will keep you posted and amused.

And with Valentines Day just round the corner, here are some rather special hand-made chocolates from Cartografie, the brain child of our favourite UK chef, Sven Hanson Britt.

9. In Susu’s absence this month I am going to recommend “The Glass Hotel” by Emily St. John Mandel - a stunning follow up to her novel “Station Eleven”…. for which she won a National Book Award.

10. Finally with countless weeks of lockdown ahead of most us, a word on the value of silence…..

"Silence is something more than just a pause; it is that enchanted place where space is cleared and time is stayed and the horizon itself expands. In silence, we often say, we can hear ourselves think; but what is truer to say is that in silence we can hear ourselves not think, and so sink below our selves into a place far deeper than mere thought allows..." - Pico Iyer
