Stitching a Sense of Place
Personal cartography is a wonderful way to capture and catalogue our relationship to the physical world, an opportunity to think deeply about the way we move through the world, and about the places we choose to call our own, of exploration and expression. A hand-stitched textile “map”, embroidered with relevant, cartographic elements - where we’ve lived, education, work, hobbies, family, friends, values, goals as well as events such as the birth of a child, marriage, where you met your partner, favourite walks, buildings and gardens and much more - both documents our experiences and remind us of their value, positioning these memories in physical space, and the slow process of stitching allows us to return to places, both real and imagined, that have affected us. Whilst these maps would never be useful for navigation, they nonetheless lead us to a deeper understanding of ourselves, what we are drawn to, what stays with us, and what inspires us to keep exploring. The results are often both beautiful and surprising.
The Event
Over the 5 days of workshop Ekta Kaul will focus on the techniques of how to use stitch to make commemorative “maps”. Under her gentle guidance each student will create a customised textile record of a personally significant place. Inspiration will be drawn from personal memorabilia, photographs and souvenirs to explore individual narratives. Students will develop visual compositions and learn to translate key motifs, textures and patterns evocative of place. Experiments on paper will be translated to fabric and vice-a-versa, informing a visual language that is deeply personal. Through stimulating dialogue and gentle feedback, the emphasis will be on enabling students to develop individual responses and creative thinking through making.
To inspire creativity and thought, Ekta will show examples of her own work and those of other artists. She will also share her creative process as well as techniques she uses in making her coveted bespoke maps.
