One of my favourite crime writers in the 1990s, was Nicci French (actually a husband and wife duo) who have an interesting way of constructing their stories, (at least as far I know).  They each write an alternative chapter and it is a format that works; the “joins” are not apparent and the pace is fast.  Their latest book, House of Correction, came out last year.  Not one of their best, I don’t think but still a gripping psychological thriller which shifts between the confinement of prison and a courtroom drama that shows how being in any way different to your neighbours makes you an obvious “guilty” party.  It’s structure reminded me of a time when I asked a number of friends and family to write follow-up chapters to my opening story contribution and whilst it never came to anything (although three chapters were written) the idea of collaboration was beguiling and so much fun. The workshops run by LSA have certainly underlined “collaboration” as one of our main charms and hopefully will continue to do so in the not too distant future.
