Travel, memory and collections remind us all of places we have been or would like to visit because travel and our travel memories, often associated with very positive emotions, have the power to shape our personality. We are, after all, what we remember, and creating an archive of these memories and mapping our personal journeys allows us to revisit significant life events and places, whether real or imagined.

the event

Under Anne Kelly’s guidance participants will create a personal, meaningful repository for a special place (actual or imagined) of their choice. Working with techniques explored in her new book ‘Textile Travels’, she will demonstrate the use of printing, fabric collage, textile and paper lamination, hand and machine stitching using items from personal and found collections of old and new pieces of fabric, ephemera and decorative paper; the aim will be to complete a 3D, as well as a smaller folding piece, during the course of the workshop.

About Anne Kelly

 

Anne Kelly is an award winning textile artist, author and tutor based in the UK, exhibiting and teaching internationally. Her three books for Batsford represent her project and collaborative work. Anne’s heavily embroidered fabric collages are reminiscent of tapestry work and her signature stitching technique is applied to a variety of surfaces. She uses mixed media and print to further embellish her work. Anne ‘s work is represented in private and public collections in the UK and abroad. She is listed in the Crafts Council Directory.

 Anne’s second book ‘Textile Nature’ was launched at the Knitting and Stitching Shows’ in 2016. It has been reprinted and sold around the world. Her third book  ‘Textile Folk Art” was published in August and links her continued interests in working with groups, nature conservation and folk art. Her third book ‘Textile Folk Art’ was launched at the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate in 2018. Her fourth book ‘Textile Travels’  is now available and Anne is currently working towards her solo show at the Ruthin Craft Centre in the UK in 2021.

A NOTE ABOUT THE FOOD

Aquitaine and SW France is famous for its seasonal fresh produce: tomatoes, peppers, squash, artichokes, garlic, cherries and figs. We will be preparing and serving these depending on local availability. And the wines will be chosen by our resident expert! Vegetarian options will always be available but it is useful for us to know beforehand if this is a requirement.

 
 

THE WEATHER

The weather at this time of year is generally very warm and clear, but rain showers are possible during so best to pack layers and perhaps a waterproof.

DAY 1

Travel day - you will be sent information regarding transportation to Les Soeurs Anglaises (pick-ups are generally late afternoon) from Angouleme train station and Bergerac airport. Arrive at the house and settle into your rooms before our Welcome, Meet + Greet dinner.

Travel notes: You will need to arrive at either Angouleme or Bergerac by 5pm. If you wish to arrive a day early we can suggest a central hotel for you to make a booking at. There is plenty to se and places to eat in either town.

DAY 2

Introduction to L'Espace Studio and projects with Anne. In an brainstorming session, Anne will have examples of her work, books and samples to show you as well as inspirational pieces to get the creativity flowing. Ongoing discussions throughout the day will help to launch participants’ individual "stories." 

DAY 3

Work on individual mixed media projects begins with a variety of mark making activities including block printing and colour on cloth. Anne will also show you how to laminate paper and cloth to use in our processes, making a small sample folding book.

DAY 4

Today we will start to plan our larger piece of work, making a template for covering the piece and starting to make laminated panels for it, considering how to add texte and words with meaning to out work. Dinner at a local French restaurant, or Gourmet Dinner at the Maison de Maître.

DAY 5

Covering our larger pieces with panels, after stitching them and embellishing them.     Considering how to add finishing touches, like extra labels or tags, handles etc.

DAY 6

Finishing projects in the studio with Anne. "Show and Tell" of participants' work.        

DAY 7

Brunch followed by departures before lunch.

A: Single occupancy Superior double bedroom, en suite : $3900 / 3500€ /£2985

B: Shared occupancy Superior double bedroom, en suite: $3450 / 2910€ / £2645 per person (2 bookings together only)

C: Single occupancy of Twin bedroom shared bathroom: $3450 / 2910€ / £2645

D: Shared Twin bedroom / shared bathroom: $3000 / 2530€ / £2300 per person (2 bookings together only)

(There may be a small additional charge for materials provided by the workshop leader)

  • The Booking Deposit of $660/560€ due 3 months prior to the workshop 

  • The Balance due 6 weeks prior to the workshop
