Food stylist and author Louise Pickford and her husband, photographer Ian Wallace, will be taking participants behind the scenes of the fascinating and creative world of food photography and styling, and demonstrating the creative process from beginning to end, For this, our first 5 day event built around food, we are delighted to be collaborating with two consummate and hugely experienced professionals and it will be packed with demonstrations, discussions and hands on cooking, styling and photographing food .
Over the five days of this workshop Louise will be sharing her knowledge of how to research, plan, style and cook food dishes from concept through to publication. We will look at:
- food trends and where to find inspiration
- how to interpret a recipe
- where to source props
- how to story board a feature
- how to post a photoshoot.
Participants will also look at how to shop for and store food for a photo shoot; how to prep ahead and how to cook food for a photoshoot; how the food stylist and photographer work together to decide on plates and dishes that best suit the food, looking as the composition for a photograph.
Ian meanwhile will talk about food photography, how it has changed over the decades, and what is current, using examples of different food photography styles - including his own work - and discussing the various equipment and software available currently. He will guide you through the different ways to light a food shoot and to create different moods and styles. He will look at angles and composition in relation to the type of food and finally adjusting your images in various software programmes.
Working together, Louise and Ian will demonstrate how the photographer and stylist work together in pre-production. They will will give several demonstrations on cooking, styling and photographing different scenarios, which will be in a question and answer format. You will then work in groups cooking, styling and photographing your own food shoot.

about Louise and Ian
Louise has been writing about and styling food for over 25 years. She began cooking and styling food for photography in London and relocated to Sydney, Australia where she was involved in styling the props for shoots as well as the food, dividing her time between freelance commissions and WORKING as a food editor on several glossy magazine. Recently Louise and Ian relocated to SW France where they continue to work together for clients around the world including Delicious Magazine, Taste.com.au, Food & Travel magazine, Grazia, Elle Decoration, Living France (Louis is their cookery editor at present) and The Mail on Sunday. Meanwhile she has found time to write over 25 books on cooking. Her favourite chefs include Alice Waters, Kylie Kwong, Alistair Little, Deborah Madisson, Diana Henry, Luke Brugess and Yotum Ottenlenghi; and her favourite stylists are Glenn Proebstal, David Morgan, Linda Lomilino.
After a successful career as a director of photography, specialising in food and lifestyle programmes Ian returned to his first passion, stills photography. He built a very successful career working in both London and Sydney for clients that included all the main book publishers, magazine titles and Sunday newspaper supplements, shooting a mixture of editorial, packaging and advertising. Ian's main photography hero is war journalise, Don McCullen, and he also admires fellow food and lifestyle photographers, Sharyn Cairns and Con Poulos.

- 6 nights
- 5 days of L'Espace studio workshop with Louise and Ian
- All breakfasts, lunches (except 1 on local market am), dinners and refreshments
- Snacks and beverages throughout your stay
- Pick-up and drop-off at arrival airport Bergerac / train station Angouleme (at allocated times)*
- *Air and train fares to and from collection points in France are not included.
Travel day - you will be sent information regarding transportation to Les Soeurs Anglaises (pick-ups are generally late afternoon) from Angoulemetrain station and Bergerac airport. Welcome, Meet + Greet dinner at the house.
Introduction to L'Espace Studio and project with Louise and Ian. This will include one to one discussions to help launch participants’ individual projects. Louise and Ian will demonstrate cooking, styling and shooting a particular scenario.
Studio day – A closer look at interpreting recipes, choosing props and prepping food, followed by hands on interaction.
Studio day - you will begin working on your individual areas of interest, overseen by Louise and Ian. Dinner at a local French restaurant.
Studio day – Working in small groups you will shoot four different food scenarios.
Finishing projects in the studio with Louise and Ian, including post production and posting images.
Brunch followed by departures before lunch.
