For those of you who have attended a previous event at Les Soeurs Anglaises' venue (or have heard about it), you'll definitely want to know about two weekends and performances coming up this summer about which we are particularly excited. Collaborating with some of the most exceptional and enthusiastic teachers means that both the Improvisational Comedy (17th - 21st May) and Jazz Lab (24th - 28th July) are going to be simultaneously full-on and laid-back, we guarantee.
LAUGHTER and MUSIC are two powerful antidotes to anxiety, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh or the life-enhancing benefits of music. Both lighten burdens, inspire hopes, connect you to others, and keep you grounded, focused, and alert - particularly important as we get older. They are also tremendous resources for surmounting problems, enhancing relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health. Improvisational Comedy Weekend
with long established and highly acclaimed comedy company, InstantWit (and led by Second CurveDirector, Chris Grimes) who have been performing their show nationally & internationally for over 20 years. The workshops they have created are carefully structured to meet participants' individual needs. They are highly creative, always surprising, and without doubt involve a great deal of laughter, and this three day workshop will include the opportunity on Saturday evening to sit back, alongside members of the public, relax and enjoy a full performance of Instantwit. The Music Lab
led by the inimitable Deanna Bogart, award-winning, multi-instrumentalist musician and recording artist. If you're passionate about creativity, music - and Jazz, Blues and Boogie Woogie in particular - wish to move on from whatever stage of musical ability you are at and are open to challenge, then this is the workshop for you. Immerse yourself in a week of improving and learning innovative musical skills with likeminded people. Discover and establish a basic foundation from which to progress, construct solos, learn to accompany yourself and other players, or simply learn about your individual and unique musical roots. Perennially popular, with a knack for engaging her audience, Deanna easily wins hearts with her dazzling keyboards, soulful saxophone and smoky vocals and will be ending the workshop with a small public concert at Les Soeurs Anglaises' beautiful venue. THE BENEFITS OF LAUGHTER AND MUSIC
Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45minutes after.
Music boosts the immune system. It decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.
Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
Music protects the heart. It improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.
Laughter burns calories. OK, so it’s no replacement for going to the gym, but one study found that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn about 40 calories—which could be enough to lose three or four pounds over the course of a year.
Music lightens anger’s heavy load. Listening to up-beat music diffuses anger; it can put problems into perspective and give you the head space to move on from confrontations.
Laughter may even help you to live longer. A study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humor outlived those who don't laugh as much. The difference was particularly notable for those battling cancer.
